Art Raffle Fundraiser
Art + Food + Mezcal + Music
The Cooper Union School of Art | 41 Cooper Gallery | Saturday, November 4th | 6-10pm

"On September 7th, a magnitude 8.2 earthquake struck the southern part of Mexico; twelve days later another earthquake of 7.1 magnitude shook Mexico City and its surrounding areas. These two powerful earthquakes killed hundreds, toppled buildings and destroyed communities.

We want to support reconstruction efforts by raising $20,000.

We’ve collected over a hundred works of art generously donated by an amazing group of artists (see list below). These artworks will be on display November 4th at The Cooper Union School of Art.

For every donation of $200, you will receive one artwork to be raffled at 8 pm at the event + letterpress printed poster and drinks provided by Bruxo Mezcal. For donations of $25, you will receive a ticket to the event and a letterpress printed poster.

We appreciate donations of any amount. Please make donations to through this YouCaring page listed below:

Donate to YouCaring ReconstruiMx and to purchase tickets

All proceeds will be directed to communities impacted by the earthquakes in Mexico. We are working with Mexican artist Omar Barquet who is involved in relief and rebuilding efforts in the community of El Jicarero, in the state of Morelos through the collective Los Carpintruenos; artist Maria Thereza Alves, who is working with the Museo Comunitario del Valle de Xico and the director there, Genaro Amaro Altamirano, who has been helping to deliver food and medicine directly to affected populations in Valle de Chalco; as well as artist Cristian Pineda Flores working with Centro Cultural Bacaanda asentada en Juchitan, region del Istmo, Oaxaca.

This event is organized by Alumni of The Cooper Union School of Art: Alva Mooses, Mauricio Cortes & Felipe Baeza in collaboration with The Mexican Cultural Institute in NY, Bruxo Mezcal and Insa Korean BBQ & Karaoke.

Screening Night

Amanda Friedman
Jane, Grace, and Emily

Saturday, January 14th, 5-7pm
MILLER, 17 Essex Street, New York 10002

Throughout Amanda Friedman's first solo show at the MILLER, she has been working with Lauren Anderson in the gallery at night. Together, they made a video from within and with the space of the exhibition, playing with lights and reflections. What they have generated activates the installation, and pushes Friedman's idea of time-based painting.

Anderson and Friedman have also invited several artists they are in conversation with to screen their short videos. The screening will begin at 5:30pm and features: Lauren Anderson and Amanda Friedman, Josh Brand, Heather Anne Halpert, Kate Ruggeri, and Alina Tenser.

Opening Reception June 25th, 5-8pm
Through July 23rd

Seven years ago, it was the end of a crazy, wild summer at Ox-Bow (School of Art in Saugatuck, MI) when Eric, then head chef, asked me to intern at Roots. I didn't even flinch.

At the time I lived down the street from the gallery, next to my favorite hole in the wall (for greasy late night chow) Super Sub, where customers order from behind bullet-proof glass. It’s uncanny that Eric loved the place even more than I did, frequently ordering 100-piece trays of chicken wings for after-opening parties. I couldn’t believe that anyone else I knew actually went there. And that’s what Roots has always been to me: a haven for everything I love.

While galleries often see young art students as a nuisance—guzzling up free booze and clearly not there to buy anything– Eric embraced us. Roots is first and foremost, dedicated to young, emerging artists. A lot of galleries like to claim that, but Roots takes great pride in showing work that is fresh, curious, and inspired. Roots wants to be different, and is different.

I remember one year, helping install the gallery’s booth at the MDW fair, and we were blasting a new mixtape of Eric’s. Another gallerist walked by and said, “Looks like you guys are having fun.” We were. We were always having fun.

And though we had fun, I don’t want to discredit the fact that Roots has not only survived ten years as a gallery, but thrived. Its impact and contribution to the Chicago art scene is without question.

Everything about the space feels inspired and it’s been a pleasure to watch all of Eric’s brain children come into the world. Roots’ passion is infectious.

When I left Chicago two years ago for grad school, I had to adapt to a new community. And now I return to the Roots crew. As past interns and friends of R&C, half of us still in Chicago, half of us elsewhere, we hope this anniversary exhibition continues the gallery’s lineage. And as always, we had fun working together.

4/5/16

- performing in run bambi a new work by lex brown at the yale cabaret with lex brown and aarica west, april 7-9th, performances at 8 and 11pm

run bambi is a new work exploring some-bodies’ bodies, now and in a speculative future. donald trump would say, 'it’s a movement' – a poem in character sketch, song, rap, and text – a spastic movement about identity and moving through time – a movement within this body of mine (it’s black, it’s woman, it’s whatever) – a body saying, 'drawing the moon is as easy as tracing the floor with national pride.' - on fire by jonathan griffin, available now through paper monument.

"artists’ studios have been burning down for centuries. in paper monument's newest publication, on fire, author jonathan griffin asked ten contemporary artists how they recovered after their studios went up in flames. talking to them, he gained surprising insights into their working methods, their relationship to their chosen profession, and their reasons for making art.

on fire includes writing on matthew chambers, anthony pearson, christian cummings, catherine howe, erik van lieshout, jp munro, william j. o’brien, kate ruggeri, john riepenhoff, and brendan fowler."
